Can you find this spot on the playground? This is how bees enter and exit the hive!

WE HAVE NEW RESIDENTS AT SMALLEY ELEMENTARY!

They are gentle. They live in a big group called a colony. They have yellow and dark brown bands. They are Texas-Italian Bees and they live in Room 80! Ms. Giguere will be a friend to the Smalley Bees.  She will make sure the bees are happy and healthy in their hive.

The Smalley Beehive offers students a unique, hands-on learning experience right inside their school. Through a partnership with New Britain ROOTS and the Huneebee Project, the observational hive allows students to explore the world of pollinators, honeymaking, and beekeeping while safely observing the bees at work. The hive is part of a broader initiative to foster environmental awareness and sustainability, supported by an adjacent pollinator garden installed with help from the Rotary Club of New Britain. Together, these resources help students gain a deeper appreciation for nature and the essential role bees play in our ecosystem.
